Tjay is a new participant on programme. He is a mandated participant and he knows there are serious consequences if he doesn’t attend. TJay has researched the bus route to the building where the programme will take place. He has planned what time he will leave the house and he knows how long the walk from the bus stop will take him. The night before, TJay sets three alarms, so he doesn’t oversleep. On the morning of the programme, TJay receives a phone call from the programme facilitator. The building where the programme was due to take place has been hired out for a private event and so the venue has had to be changed last minute. The facilitator provides TJay with the new address and gives him some verbal directions. TJay leaves the house as planned but he realises that he has no idea about where to go or how to get there. He feels stupid that he couldn’t retain the information. He hates making phone calls, so he doesn’t call the facilitator back. TJay does not attend his first session. When he is questioned about his non-attendance by his probation officer, TJay becomes extremely upset and defensive.
