4.1 What is the SPACE framework?

To help structure this part of the guide, we have utilised a framework called Autistic SPACE. The Autistic SPACE Framework33. was originally designed by Autistic doctors and colleagues in relation to Autism, and has been trialled in different settings, including in healthcare and social work. However, it is also helpful to use SPACE when considering other aspects of neurodivergence, including ADHD. The SPACE Framework provides straightforward guidance on key elements of neuroinclusive design, capturing several relevant domains that address human needs, regardless of neurotype (e.g., this will also benefit neurotypical people).SPACE stands for sensory; predictability; acceptance; communication and empathy, as outlined in figure 5. The SPACE Framework also considers a person’s physical, processing and emotional states, and recognises that a person’s capacity can fluctuate depending on the environment they are in, their familiarity with their surroundings and the stressors that are placed upon them.
