5.1a Building

Think SPACE!
  • Ensure buildings and spaces have low sensory traffic.
  • Provide predictability for familiarity and to reduce anxiety.

KEY ISSUES

Some Neurodivergent individuals may struggle to attend initial appointments as their communication and/or sensory needs may not align with established organisational structures, processes, or protocols. This can be a source of anxiety and distress, and can lead to meltdown, shutdown, and failure to attend appointments due to the unpredictable nature of the environment. Sources of anxiety include:

  • Unfamiliar settings and building layout.
  • Unfamiliarity with staff (particularly for those with prosopagnosia).
  • Sensory bombardment and overload (lights, telephones, air conditioning, room fragrances).

PRACTICAL TIPS

General:

  • Room familiarisation/acclimatisation: offer prearranged or video/ photo tour of the building and intervention room.
  • Provide a quiet room/space in reception areas (which can also be used during group/session breaks).
  • Clearly displayed and labelled map of the building on reception walls.
  • Clear photos of staff and their names.
  • Change fluorescent lights for alternatives (ideally halogen) and ensure that no buzzing or flickering is present.
  • Natural lighting (where possible) and have blinds in rooms so these can be adjusted.
  • Leave multisensory tools on tables.

Holistic and individualised adaptations

  • Check referral documents to identify whether the client has a passport or helpful information gathered by professionals previously (though be aware that needs may vary across different settings, particularly when Autism and ADHD intersect).
  • Get to know your client during initial contact to identify collaboratively what adaptations they need (see section 5.2).
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
It may not always be possible to make adjustments to every environment. For example, service providers can be reliant on securing access to free venues. However, where possible, it is advisable to send a checklist in advance to identify whether the building is or can be made as Neurodivergent friendly as possible.
