5. Supporting Neurodivergent clients

This section of the guide focuses on different aspects of interventions and provides practical guidance for your work with Neurodivergent clients. We begin with outlining how environments (buildings and intervention rooms) can be made more Neurodivergent friendly from the outset. We then move to how practitioners can explore individual needs and adaptations more specifically and understanding specific risks in the home. We then move towards implementing assessed needs and adaptations by suggesting some practical tips that can be used alongside your respective interventions and organisations. Do look out for the ‘other considerations’ commentary boxes where we offer key reflections and tips, including for working alongside integrated support services.

Key issues and practical tips are shared through the lens of the SPACE Framework for the following six aspects of intervention work:

5.1 Building and environment.

5.2 Assessment of needs and adaptations.

5.3 Understanding risk to partner and children.

5.4 Supporting and maintaining engagement in the intervention.

5.5 Addressing coercive structural control during behaviour change work.

5.6 Supporting safe intervention exit and sources of support
